The molecule

What is NAD+?

Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) is a coenzyme found in every living cell. It is made from forms of vitamin B3 and acts like a rechargeable battery, carrying energy between the reactions that turn food into usable cellular energy.

Beyond energy, NAD+ is a required fuel for enzymes involved in DNA repair and cellular maintenance. Research indicates that NAD+ levels decline with age, which is why it has become one of the most studied molecules in healthy-ageing science.

NAD+ at a glance

  • Present in all human cells
  • Derived from vitamin B3 (niacin, nicotinamide)
  • Central to mitochondrial energy production
  • Consumed by sirtuins and PARP enzymes
  • Levels reported to fall with age
Health & wellbeing

Why NAD+ matters for human health

NAD+ is an area of active research. The points below summarise what studies suggest; they are not claims that any VitaNAD+ product prevents, treats or cures any condition.

Cellular energy

NAD+ is essential to how mitochondria generate ATP, the cell's energy currency.

DNA maintenance

Studies indicate NAD+ supports PARP enzymes that help detect and repair DNA damage.

Healthy ageing

Research suggests restoring NAD+ may support processes linked to healthy ageing in preclinical models.

Metabolic health

NAD+ participates in hundreds of metabolic reactions; studies are exploring its role in metabolic wellbeing.

Sirtuin activity

Sirtuins, proteins associated with cellular resilience, depend on NAD+ to function.

Skin appearance (cosmetic)

Our topical line is formulated to help skin look smoother, more hydrated and radiant.

The science, simply

How NAD+ works

NAD+ / NADH redox

NAD+ accepts electrons to become NADH, then hands them on in the mitochondria. This shuttle drives the production of ATP.

Mitochondrial energy

NADH feeds the electron transport chain, the final stage of cellular respiration where most energy is made.

Sirtuins

Sirtuins (SIRT1–7) use NAD+ to regulate gene activity, metabolism and stress responses.

PARPs

PARP enzymes consume NAD+ when repairing DNA. Heavy demand can draw down cellular NAD+.

Age-related decline

Studies report lower NAD+ in several tissues with age, linked to increased consumption (e.g. by CD38) and reduced synthesis.

Precursors vs direct NAD+

Precursors such as nicotinamide riboside (NR) and nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN) are converted into NAD+ inside cells. Direct NAD+ supplies the coenzyme itself; how it is taken up and used is still being researched.
